Major Agricultural Industries

Coffee

70% of national production

The Mareeba district is Australia's coffee capital. Over a dozen plantations grow premium arabica on the rich red volcanic soil of the Tablelands, benefiting from the ideal elevation (400-600m) and tropical climate.

Avocados

$47 million annually

Mareeba Shire is a major avocado-producing region. Hass and Shepard varieties thrive in the red soil and warm climate. Season runs from March to September with peak production in May-June.

Mangoes

$40 million annually

One of Australia's top mango regions. Kensington Pride (Bowen), R2E2, Calypso, and other varieties are grown. Season runs from October to February, with Christmas being peak mango time.

Sugar Cane

$45 million in exports

MSF Sugar's Tableland Mill processes cane from 6,600 hectares across 75 farms. The crushing season runs from June to November. The mill also generates 24MW of renewable green energy from bagasse.

Beef Cattle

50,000+ head yarded/year

The Mareeba Saleyards is one of North Queensland's busiest cattle markets. Weekly sales attract buyers from across the state. The district's grasslands support both breeding and fattening operations.
